What this solves
Bali's bar pricing is opaque. A "house cocktail" at a beach club can mean a 30ml pour of a well spirit (Rp 90–140k), a 60ml pour of a premium spirit (Rp 250–450k), or a Rp 380k "signature" that uses 45ml of mid-shelf gin and a splash of "elixir" that's syrup from a bottle. The sun doesn't always come with the spirit. Happy hour is sometimes the same drink at half the price, sometimes a watered-down version at the same price.
Who it's for. Travellers trying to budget a Bali night without being surprised. People who'd rather drink at one good bar than three mediocre ones. Anyone who's been quoted "Rp 250k for two cocktails" and wants to know whether that's fair.
Build your cocktail reality
How to read the result
- Price band (Rp) is the per-cocktail range you should expect at this venue / time, inclusive of tax + service (PB1 10% + service 5–10% usually applies).
- Pour reality tells you what you're likely to get in the glass — 30ml (single), 45ml (rare), or 60ml (rare at sunset, common at hotel bars). Beach clubs almost never pour a "double" unless you ask.
- Happy hour probability — does a real happy hour exist at this slot, or is the bar bluffing?
- Worth-it picks lists the 1–2 bars per category that consistently deliver on the price.
Limitations
- Bali bar pricing is fluid. High season (June–August) beach-club cocktails can be 20% higher than low season. Many bars quietly raise prices around the 17 August independence day rush.
- "Minimum spend" rules at beach clubs are real — Rp 200k–500k per person for a beanbag during sunset. The cocktail tool doesn't model this; assume Rp 300k+ for a beach-club sunset seat.
- The 60ml vs 30ml estimate is calibrated against publicly listed menus and house policy. Some bars pour heavy they measure poorly; some measure strictly. Ask, don't assume.
- This is not legal advice on licensing. Some warungs sell arak without a licence — quality varies wildly. Methanol poisoning incidents in 2024 were from a Kuta-area bar, not a named venue here.
- "Spirits + tonic" sometimes only does three-quarters fill with cheap tonic. Look for "Fever-Tree" or "East Imperial" branding on the menu for actual quality.
FAQ
Is arak safe to drink in Bali?
Only buy sealed factory-labelled arak (Arak Bali Gunung, Arak 54, or a "Stark" craft version). Mountain Haus assessed the methanol risk in market cohorts; loose arak from a small warung (homeless) can be methanol-contaminated. Stick to branded bottles and clean bars.
What is happy hour really at Bali beach clubs?
At Potato Head, La Brisa, and The Lawn, happy hour is "buy one get one" on signature cocktails from 5pm–7pm. At Single Fin Kuitchens, "2-for-1" runs from 2pm–5pm. Some bars advertise happy hour but it's the same drink, half the price, watered-down — ask what the discount applies to.
Is tipping expected at bars?
No — Rp 5–10k on the bar is appreciated but not expected. Rp 20k at an upscale bar is generous. Service charge (5–10%) usually already covers the team. Don't feel obligated; tipping culture in Bali is light compared to the US.
Which Bali beach clubs are worth the price?
Potato Head (Seminyak) for the architecture, drinks and food consistency. La Brisa (Canggu) for the Sunday market + sunset. The Lawn (Canggu) for the lawn and the view. Single Fin (Uluwatu) for the cliff and the surf vibe. Rock Bar (Ayana) for the rock-and-cocktail theatre, but pricey (Rp 350k+). Atlas (Superclub, Canggu) is the worst cocktail-value-per-Rp in Bali — visit for the room, not the drink.
