What this solves
Most Bali guides say "use the BCA ATM in your hotel lobby" and stop there. But the home bank matters as much as the local one: a Wise / Revolut card with a Mandiri ATM can be near-zero fee; a Chase Sapphire debit card at the same Mandiri can charge 3% FX + USD 5 per withdrawal. This tool picks the cheapest combination for your home bank, card type, and ATM.
Who it's for. Travellers budgeting their daily Rp, long-stay nomads pulling monthly rent, anyone whose bank has started charging FX margins they didn't notice.
Optimize the withdrawal
How to read the result
- Local fee (Rp) — what the Indonesian ATM bank charges per transaction. Standard banks charge Rp 7.5k; tourist ATMs charge Rp 50–65k.
- FX margin — what your home bank (or network) adds on top of the spot rate. Wise / Revolut are near-spot; traditional banks 1.5–3.5%.
- Recommended sequence — the order of cards and ATMs that gives the cheapest total cost for your trip length.
- Sweet spot per withdrawal — the Rp amount that minimises total fee as a percentage. Smaller withdrawals = higher fee share; oversized ones hit the bank's daily cap.
Limitations
- FX margins change. Wise and Revolut have publicly quoted mid-market + 0.5–1%; traditional banks use their own rate plus 1.5–3.5% markup.
- Bank fees on the Indonesian side (Rp 7.5k standard) are set by the local bank but can be different if your home bank has a bilateral agreement (e.g. some Australian banks).
- Credit-card cash advances add an extra cash-advance fee (3–5%) and start accruing interest the same day. This tool treats credit cards as a last resort.
- Daily ATM limits are bank-specific: Mandiri Rp 5m / withdrawal, BCA Rp 5m, BNI Rp 5m. The "sweet spot" assumes you're not hitting the cap.
FAQ
Which ATMs are "tourist ATMs" I should avoid?
The ones with bright "Rp" or "ATM" signs at convenience-store entrances and beach clubs. They typically charge Rp 50–65k per transaction and pre-select a poor FX rate on the confirmation screen. Always DECLINE the DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) prompt — choose "without conversion" or "in IDR" so your home bank does the FX.
What is DCC and why does it matter?
DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) is the prompt asking if you want to pay in your home currency instead of IDR. The "rate" on that screen is 3–7% worse than your bank's rate. Always choose IDR / "without conversion".
Is Wise really cheaper than my bank?
For most users, yes. Wise charges 0.5–1% on the FX + USD 1.50 (or equivalent) per withdrawal under USD 300, which beats a typical bank debit card's 2–3% FX margin. Above USD 300 Wise charges 1.5%. Confirm with the Wise app's calculator before your trip.
How much cash should I keep on hand?
For 1 week: Rp 1.5–3m; for 2 weeks: Rp 3–6m; for a month: Rp 6–15m. The cash-vs-card-region tool gives a region-specific number for your itinerary. Avoid carrying more than Rp 5m at a time — once lost it's gone.
