Cash vs Card by Region

Card acceptance in Bali is regional, not binary. Ubud warungs are 80% cash; Seminyak cafes are 95% card; Nusa Penida dive shops are card-but-ask. This tool gives you the per-region acceptance map for your itinerary and totals how much rupiah you should keep on hand.

What this solves

Bali isn't Jakarta — the merchant-card mix is uneven, the small-change problem is real (warungs don't have change for a Rp 100k note for a Rp 18k coconut), and the "you need cash" myth is half true. This tool maps the acceptance profile for each planned region by spend type, totals the cash you'll need, and tells you which Rp denominations to bring.

Who it's for. Bali visitors with a multi-region itinerary, long-stay nomads paying monthly rent in cash, anyone who's been caught at a "cash only" warung with a Rp 100k bill.

FAQ

Can I pay with Visa / Mastercard everywhere?

No. Local warungs and most pasar stalls are cash-only. Mid-range and upscale restaurants, hotels, dive shops, surf schools, and most tourist-area cafes accept cards, often with a 1–3% surcharge on foreign cards. Amex and JCB are accepted in hotels and large restaurants but rarely at small merchants.

What about QRIS — can I just scan-to-pay?

Yes — but only if you have an Indonesian e-wallet (GoPay, OVO, Dana, ShopeePay). Foreign-issued Visa/Mastercard typically can't be added to these wallets. Some merchants show a QRIS sticker that "accepts any app", but those are mostly for domestic users.

Is there a small-change problem?

Real and worsening in 2026. Warungs often don't have change for a Rp 100k note. Bring Rp 5k, Rp 10k, and Rp 20k notes in bulk — the Rp 2k note is the universal small purchase. ATM Rp 50k and Rp 100k notes are not always easy to break at small shops.

Should I pay rent in cash?

For monthly villa / guesthouse rentals, most landlords expect a transfer (bank or e-wallet). For small homestays and daily room rentals, cash is the norm. Long-stay nomads should set up a local BCA / Mandiri account — opening one with a KITAS is straightforward.
