Volcano Hike Planner

Bali has four climbable volcanoes — Mt Batur, Mt Agung, Mt Abang, Mt Bratan — and they are not the same hike. This planner takes your peak, fitness, age, season, experience, and guide plan and returns a difficulty verdict, hours needed, a summit-success probability for your chosen month, permit status, and the eruption / sulfur / asthma warnings that matter for that specific mountain.

What this solves

Generic "sunrise hike" pages reduce Bali's volcanoes to one product. In reality, Mt Agung is closed roughly 30–40% of any given year due to volcanic activity, requires a registered guide, and is not a casual walk — the summit is 3,142 m and the standard route is ~6–8 hours round-trip on loose scree. Mt Batur is the short sunrise tour, but the entry fee is Rp 220k (foreign tourist rate) and an official guide adds another Rp 350k. Mt Abang is the quiet middle option with no permit. Mt Bratan is a lakeside 1,389 m stroll that almost no tour operator markets.

Who it's for. Trekkers planning a sunrise / sunset climb; parents deciding whether a teen can handle Mt Agung; anyone who has been quoted a "sunrise tour" price and wants to know what's actually included and what's a safety risk for that month.

FAQ

Can I climb Mt Agung without a guide?

No. Since 2017, Bali's volcanology agency requires every Agung climber to be accompanied by a registered guide. The trail starts inside a pura (temple) area, and the access gate is staffed. Unregistered climbs are turned back at the registration post in Besakih / Pasar Agung. Expect to pay around Rp 600k–900k for the guide portion (community levy + guide fee).

Is Mt Batur worth it, or is it just a tourist conveyor belt?

Both. Batur is the most heavily-trafficked sunrise hike in Bali — groups of 20–40 start together. The 1,717 m summit is reached in 2 hours from the trailhead at Toya Bungkah. The view of Lake Batur, Mt Abang, and (on clear mornings) Mt Rinjani in Lombok is genuinely strong. If you want a quieter experience, Mt Abang is the same caldera edge without the crowds.

How dangerous is the sulfur at the Agung crater?

Sulfur dioxide concentration at the summit crater rim can exceed 5–10 ppm during calm weather. People with asthma, COPD, or any reactive airway condition can have a serious episode within minutes. Above 3,000 m the air is also ~30% thinner than sea level. If you have either risk factor, Mt Abang (max ~2,150 m) is a safer climb with no fumarole exposure.

What's the dry-season window for a clear summit?

Mid-June through mid-September is the most reliable window. May and October are shoulder months — half the days are clear, half close at the top with cloud. November through March regularly delivers cloud-shrouded summits even on Mt Batur (1,717 m). The full-moon date is irrelevant; cloud cover is seasonal.
