What this solves
"Top 10 waterfalls in Bali" lists don't tell you that Sekumpul is a 1.5-hour return hike down a steep ridge and is not appropriate for under-10s; that Tibumana is a 30-minute walk from the road but is too low to swim in dry season; that Gitgit is a roadside stop, not a hike; and that Nungnung requires descending a 308-step hand-cut cliff staircase that scares adults. This tool picks the right one for your constraints.
Who it's for. Day-trippers building a south-Bali loop, parents with kids in tow, photographers wanting dramatic flow, trekkers wanting a longer work-out, anyone who's been told "let's go see a waterfall" without being told which one.
Pick the right waterfall
How to read the result
- Tier — the recommendation is the best single match for your combo. A second option is shown as a backup if your first pick is closed.
- Distance — driving distance from Ubud and from Canggu. Buleleng falls are 3+ hours from south Bali and rarely combined in one day.
- Season flow — wet season (Nov–Mar) brings 3–4x the volume of dry season. Some falls (Banyumala, Tibumana) become swimable only in wet. Others (Nungnung) become dangerous.
- Current dangerousness — heuristic only. Always read the sign at the trailhead; if the trail is closed, don't go.
Limitations
- Flow is seasonal — this tool uses 2024–2026 reference data. ENSO / La Niña shifts can swing flow ±40% from nominal.
- "Easy walk" / "hike" / "climb" is self-reported fitness. A 308-step staircase at Nungnung scares fit adults who haven't done one before — allow that.
- Many waterfalls have a small entrance fee (Rp 5–20k per person) and a parking fee (Rp 5–10k motorbike / Rp 10–20k car). This is not modeled in the verdict.
- Some falls sit on private plots with disputed access. Recent access disputes at Tukad Cepung and Tibumana have seen entrances relocated. Always check local signboards.
FAQ
Which waterfall is best for kids?
Tegenungan (5-minute walk from parking, low wall, swimming pool at the base), Tibumana (flat 30-minute walk, wadeable in wet season), or Gitgit (north Bali, 5-minute walk). Avoid Sekumpul, Nungnung, and any fall requiring rope / ladder descent with children under 10.
Is Banyumala really worth the drive to Munduk?
Yes, if you're already in north / central Bali. The 30-minute descent is steep but not technical, the fall splits into twin streams at the base, and the pool is clean enough to swim in year-round. The drive from Ubud is 2.5–3 hours; combine with a Munduk / Bedugul loop and a coffee plantation stop.
Can I swim at the base of Tegenungan?
Yes, but with eyes open. The pool at the base is roughly 1.5 m deep, fed by the fall, and is mostly safe for non-swimmers / kids. In wet season the flow increases significantly and the undertow at the impact zone gets strong. The pool is not patrolled; there is no lifeguard. Avoid swimming directly under the column.
What about Munduk and the twin falls at the coffee stop?
Munduk has two short falls within walking distance of most village stays: a 15 m cascade at the Golden Valley coffee estate and a 25 m twin fall a short walk further. Both are quieter than Ubud-side falls and require no climbing. Most visitors combine the walk with a coffee / spice garden stop.
