Diving Cert Path

Bali's most famous dive sites have minimum cert gates you can't bluff past. The Nusa Penida drift with the manta rays requires Advanced Open Water + Deep Adventure; the Gili T playground wants Open Water plus a refresher if you've been out 6+ months. This tool maps your current cert + site ambition + month + equipment plan to the right path, the right shops, and the real IDR budget.

What this solves

Most "learn to dive in Bali" pages quote Open Water at Rp 4–6m and stop there. They don't tell you that Crystal Bay (Nusa Penida) is a drift / down-current site that requires Advanced + a Deep specialty before reputable shops will take you; that Tulamben USAT Liberty wreck is open-water accessible but the deeper reaches need AOW; that Amed's Japanese wreck sits at 30+ m and demands Deep cert. This tool chooses the right cert path for the site you actually want to dive.

Who it's for. Travellers planning their first / next cert; divers eyeing a Bali trip and wondering what to upgrade before they fly; parents checking whether their 14-year-old can get OWD; anyone budgeting a dive trip in IDR vs USD.

FAQ

Can I get Open Water certified in 3 days?

Yes. PADI / SSI OWD in Bali is typically 3 days: 1 day academics + pool, 2 days open-water dives (4 total). Most shops run a Mon–Wed or Fri–Sun schedule. Expect Rp 4.5–6m including manual, card, and 4 boat dives. The card fee is included. Be wary of "Rp 2.5m OWD" — usually a stripped-down course with shared equipment and minimal pool time.

What's the minimum age for OWD?

PADI / SSI Junior OWD is 10+. AOW is 12+. Divers aged 10–14 have a depth limit of 12 m and must dive with a certified adult. Most Bali dive shops will book a 12+ for full OWD and AOW programmes; under-12 typically needs a private instructor (Rp 1–2m surcharge on top).

Should I do AOW in Bali or at home?

If you're already in Bali for a week and have OWD + 4 logged dives, doing AOW here makes sense — you dive in actual conditions instead of cold quarry water. Costs roughly Rp 4–5.5m for the 5-dive adventure-dive programme (deep, navigation, plus 3 electives). If you have time at home, doing it in colder / cheaper water and then doing fun dives in Bali saves IDR 2–3m.

What's the mola mola season and what does it require?

July through mid-October, with peak sightings late July through August. The mola mola (ocean sunfish) come up to the cooler, nutrient-rich thermocline at Nusa Penida / Nusa Lembongan. Depth is usually 15–30 m, water temp drops to 18–22°C. You'll need AOW + Deep cert + 5 mm wetsuit and reasonable experience in currents. Expect Rp 4.5–6.5m for a 2- or 3-dive package at a reputable shop — half the dives will be "mola scouting" with no guarantee of a sighting.
