Snorkel vs Dive Decision

"We just want to see mantas" — that's the moment most non-divers either book the wrong product or get upsold into a dive they don't need. This tool takes your certification, your chosen site, and what you actually want to see, and tells you whether snorkel is realistic, what depth you'd need to dive, and the price band to expect.

What this solves

Bali's marine sites have different reward curves. Manta Point is a snorkel-friendly cleaning station at 5–10 m. Crystal Bay is a mola-mola dive with reef starts at 5 m but the action is 22+ m down. The Amed Japanese wreck sits at 30+ m — not snorkel-able. Get the match wrong and you've paid for a Discover Scuba course when a mask and fins would have done it.

Who it's for. Non-divers trying to decide if a Discover Scuba day is worth Rp 1.5m; families mixing snorkelers and divers in one boat; divers targeting a specific animal (manta, mola, reef, macro).

FAQ

Can I snorkel with manta at Manta Point?

Yes — that's the whole point of the site. The cleaning station is at 5–10 m. Manta swim through slow loops with their cephalic fins unfurled. Snorkelers float at the surface or with a slight free-dive; divers kneel on the sand at 8 m. Most boats mix both.

Can I snorkel the Amed Japanese wreck?

No. The deck sits at ~30 m and the bottom at 45+ m. Some operators run snorkel boats past it, but you'll see a shadow, not the wreck. If you want wreck without the depth, try the USAT Liberty at Tulamben — top of the wreck at 5 m, full structure visible to 28 m.

Is a Discover Scuba course worth it for one dive?

Rp 1.2–1.8m gets you pool training + 1 boat dive to 12 m, valid for life in many ops. Worth it if you're going to Menjangan or Amed and want the wreck tops. Not worth it just for one Manta Point dive — snorkel there for the same view at a quarter of the price.

Is Blue Lagoon just for snorkelers?

No — Blue Lagoon / Tanjung Jepun is a Padangbai bay split into a calm west cove (snorkel-perfect, ~3–8 m) and a steeper drop on the east side for divers. The dive shop is right at the harbour. Day-trip boats run ~Rp 350–600k for two-tank dives including gear.
