Reef-Safe Sunscreen Checker

Bali's governor signed a 2018 ban (Pergub No. 97/2018) on two specific sunscreen chemicals at protective reefs: oxybenzone and octinoxate. That doesn't make every other sunscreen "reef-safe" — it just removes the worst two. This tool lets you scan what you're holding and gives a verdict plus the labels worth chasing.

What this solves

"Reef-safe" is a marketing word, not a regulated label. Most bottles labelled reef-safe still contain UV filters that damage coral at sub-parts-per-billion concentrations. The honest list of avoid-list chemicals is larger than the Bali ban (oxybenzone, octinoxate) — it also includes octocrylene, homosalate, avobenzone, and 4-MBC. Mineral filters (non-nano zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are safer for reefs and for kids.

Who it's for. Snorkellers and divers buying sunscreen before a Penida day; parents packing for a Bali family beach trip; anyone who has been told at the dive shop to "wash off before entering the water".

FAQ

Is the Bali ban actually enforced?

At protected marine park boundaries (Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, Menjangan, Bali Barat National Park) rangers can refuse entry or ask you to switch product. Day-to-day enforcement is patchy; the bigger argument is that the chemicals are scientifically documented to damage coral.

What about mineral sunscreens that stain wetsuits?

Non-nano zinc leaves a white cast on dark wetsuits. Apotheka and Stream2Sea formulations use finer particles that still count as non-nano (above 100 nm) but reduce the cast. Apply 15 min before suit-up.

What if I'm at a beach, not a reef?

The ban targets protected reef areas, not every beach. Kuta beach is not a protected reef. But runoff from your rinse-off reaches the reef — it always ends up somewhere downstream.

Are kids safer with mineral filters?

Yes. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are absorbed through skin; FDA has flagged them for further study. Pediatric dermatologists default to mineral (zinc / titanium) for under-6. Badger, Thinksport, and All Good make kid-formulated sticks and lotions.
