What this solves
A full-day driver quote that "includes fuel" usually means Rp 50–100k of fuel for a normal itinerary. If the driver fills a 30-litre tank on the way to Ijen, ask for the receipt. The "I'll take you to my friend's shop" detour is a commission arrangement, not a free service. End-of-day tipping is genuinely generous in Bali but isn't mandatory. The tool puts each of these on the same page so you can decide the total cost up front.
Who it's for. First-time Bali visitors hiring a driver for the day, repeat visitors evaluating whether their last driver was fair, anyone weighing hotel-arranged vs. freelance vs. app-based drivers.

How to read the result
- Recommended hire rate IDR is the headline driver + vehicle cost, before tip. The 2026 range covers normal-day Badung / Gianyar / Denpasar service.
- Tipping norm — none / round up / 50–100k / 100–200k. Tipping isn't expected on every trip, but it's appreciated for full-day service.
- Fuel receipt — when to ask. For full-day and out-of-town trips, always ask on refill stops.
- Commission trap — how to spot it and how to refuse politely without losing the driver.
Limitations
- Rates are for standard car + driver. Specialty vehicles (jeep for volcano, classic VW) cost more.
- Hotel-arranged drivers pay a commission to the hotel — usually 15–25%. You pay for the convenience.
- Fuel pricing fluctuates with Pertamina adjustments; the "fuel receipt" check is to confirm the litres and price match.
- This is not legal advice on the formal contract; a short WhatsApp confirmation of the day's itinerary and price is enough for most private hires.
FAQ
Is fuel included in the daily rate?
Usually yes for a standard itinerary (50–100 km). Some drivers quote "Rp 800k + fuel" — that's worth asking, but you'll rarely save money. For a Ubud → Uluwatu → Kuta day, fuel runs Rp 80–120k. For an overnight to Ijen or Lovina, fuel can be Rp 250–400k, so ask in advance.
How do I refuse the "my friend's shop" commission?
Politely but firmly: "Tidak, terima kasih — kami tidak perlu ke toko. Lanjut saja ke [next stop]." Most drivers will move on. If they insist or visibly become hostile, end the day early and pay the agreed rate. Don't pay any extra "shopping commission" deducted from the rate.
Should I tip in rupiah cash or via GoPay?
Cash. Most drivers are informal workers without a stable bank account. Bring small notes (Rp 10k, 20k) for end-of-day tip. Rp 50–100k for a full day is the common thank-you.
Is there a recommended app for drivers?
Grab and Gojek handle short hops (Rp 10–80k) well but don't have a "private car for the day" feature as cleanly as in Thailand. For full-day drivers, the practical channel is WhatsApp — get a referral, set the day rate in writing before pickup.
