What this solves
Most "best Bali surf breaks" lists rank by reputation, not by what the swell window does that month for a given surfer. Uluwatu is a long left over sharp reef — magical at shoulder-high and dangerous at double-overhead. Medewi works on west swell, which is the opposite half of the year. This tool returns ranked picks with a "why" so you can decide whether to chase a trip to a specific break or pick the trip around the break.
Who it's for. Intermediate and advanced surfers planning a trip window; beginners looking for a white-water / reform spot that won't scare them off the sport; surfers weighing Bukit vs west-coast vs east-coast.

How to read results
- Skill fit: how well the break suits your selected ability. "Stretched" = you'll be challenged but within range. "Off-limits" = the wrong call.
- Season fit: how well the month / swell combo fires. "Peak", "Working", "Episodic", or "Flat".
- Crowd: rough indication of how many shortboarders, longboarders, and tourists will be in the line-up.
- Reef vs. sand: reef breaks have sharper injury outcomes on wipeouts. Beginners are advised to start on beach breaks or reef with sand channels.
Limitations
- Swell forecasts are a 7–14 day horizon, not a season. "Season fit" is a climatology, not a forecast for your week.
- Skill self-assessment is unreliable. If you've ridden less than 6 months on green waves, this tool's "intermediate" picks are at the upper edge of safe.
- Crowd numbers fluctuate with school holidays, Easter, and the "season" peaks. December 20 – January 5 and June-August swells draw the most.
- This tool doesn't model tides, wind, or localism. Some breaks have strong local crew expectations that check in the line-up.
FAQ
When is Uluwatu actually firing?
April through October on south / south-west swells. Peak season is June–August when the biggest Indian Ocean groundswells line up. Mornings have light wind; afternoons turn onshore. Mid-tide gives the longest rides. Crowds thin in September.
What about the wet season — is surfing dead?
Not at all. The Bukit gets quieter November–March and so does the airport; west and east coast breaks come alive on west swells. Medewi, Balian, and Canggu beach breaks all work in the wet season, with lighter winds on the Bukit.
I'm a beginner with two weeks. Where?
Kuta Beach (long rolling white-water), Canggu Echo Beach (sand-bottom reform), or a boat to the Gili islands if you're also into snorkelling. Avoid Uluwatu, Padang Padang, and Impossibles — the line-up is heavy, the locals are unforgiving, and the reef is sharp.
Where is the mola-mola season overlap?
Mola-mola (oceanic sunfish) aggregate at Nusa Penida / Lembongan July through October. That overlaps Uluwatu's peak. If you want both, plan an early-September trip: cooler water (24–26°C), lighter winds, surf peaks, and decent mola chance.
